World No Tobacco Day
World No Tobacco Day
World no tobacco day is celebrated on May 31st every year. This initiative was adopted by the world health organization (who) in 1987 to draw everyone's attention to the tobacco epidemic.
This day gives us the opportunity to raise awareness among the general public about the harmful effects of tobacco. According to the global adult tobacco survey (GATS), India 2016-17 fact sheet, 42.4% of men, 14.2% of women, and 28.6% of adults, a total of 266.8 million people, use tobacco in some way. According to GLOBOCAN 2018, 92,011 cases of oral cancer and 48,698 cases of lung cancer are newly diagnosed every year in Japan.
Tobacco attacks all organs in the body, causing cancer in other organs such as the throat, esophagus, stomach, and pancreas, and causing some non-cancerous diseases. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and tobacco-related amblyopia leading to blindness are just a few of the serious illnesses caused by this deadly substance.
This annual campaign has a different theme each year. You will see no tobacco day poster everywhere on internet. The focus of this year is “tobacco and lung health”. According to WHO,
- Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and accounts for more than two-thirds of all lung cancer deaths worldwide. Second-hand smoke or second-hand smoke also increases the risk of lung cancer.
- Smoking is a major cause of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and exacerbates asthma.
- Infants and children exposed to indirect smoking as a result of use by mothers or other families are at risk of developing asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and infections.
- Exacerbates the adverse effects of tuberculosis and increases the risk of death from respiratory failure.
- Cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 harmful chemicals that cause indoor air pollution.
This is an epidemic and the best way to control it is to raise awareness and discourage people from using it. Support groups and free hotlines are available today to help people develop habits. These support groups provide psychological and/or pharmacological support to those who decide to quit smoking.
Our country became a party to the WHO framework convention on tobacco control in 2005. Mandatory warning labels for 85% of tobacco products, banning the sale, distribution, and consumption of tobacco and related products in various states, banning smoking in public places, and mandatory health warnings in movie theaters are one of the few initiatives the government has taken.
In addition to prophylaxis, tobacco & smoking causes cancer and its early detection and precancerous lesions plays an important role in reducing cancer-related morbidity and mortality. This is achieved by conducting screening camps where people are tested by trained health care workers and suspicious findings are confirmed by further testing, in addition to health education.
Early-detected cancers are curable. Let's join hands to lead the fight against cancer on this world no tobacco day
Let us make every day a world no tobacco day!
