UNITED NATIONS DAY
The
United Nations (UN) Day is observed on October 24 each year and marks the
official establishment of the United Nations in 1945.
There is no other global organization
with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United
Nations. Today, the urgency for all countries to come together, to fulfil
the promise of the nations united, has rarely been greater.
The
United Nations is an intergovernmental organisation whose primary role is to
maintain world peace and security.
It plays
an important role in developing friendly relations among countries, achieving
international cooperation and being a centre of coordination for nations.
About
the United Nations:
The UN
came into existence on October 24, 1945. The name 'United Nations' was coined
by the United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was first used in the
Declaration of the United Nations on January 1, 1942, during the Second World
War.
The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the
representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the
Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 Member States.
The United Nations officially came into existence on 24
October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet
Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other
signatories. The name "United Nations" was coined by United States
President Franklin D. Roosevelt and first used in the Declaration by United
Nations of 1 January 1942, during Second World War.
The UN
had 51 members at the time of its establishment. It is currently made up of 193
Member States. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations is a member
of the General Assembly.
The
organisation has different organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council,
the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International
Court of Justice and the UN Secretariat.
On
this day, the UN Charter was ratified by a majority of signatories, including
the five permanent members of the Security Council, which led to the official
establishment of the UN.
