In-conversation With Vandana Vinod – Mini Me
What
sparked your interest in fashion?
As a child I
always loved smaller things in life, little beautiful things in life, colours,
textures kind of, you know anything you can take in fabrics, So I used to be
that all beautiful things that was there, so I was very much interested in all
these trumps, young age plus, I had an art super fashionable, she is to be
wearing all kinds of clothes in fabrics, from different areas in India, and
plus even my dad , that is further used to go abroad and get fabrics so that
kind of fabrics, fabrics from all over the country, and from all over the
world. I used to really enjoy a dressing up
and dressing up dolls as a child, so all that really matters, how falls
a fabric falling, all this everything I was very interesting from my young age,
then I started working and studying home science in textiles, so from there it
, and I am still studying.
Are you self taught or did you study fashion design?
Yes, I did
study fashion design i am from IIFT banglore, 2003 batch. Then later on, I
started working and then after few years of working I did my course in, that is
management in cent martins in London before that I was definitely self taught
before I got an admission in IIFT, I was doing home science, lots of textiles
involved in lot of garment manufacturers involved in that, So before that I was
I had little bit of training and before home science I always loved how to stitched
clothes for dolls and stitched clothes for little little cousin of mine. So, it
is self taught in the beginning but later I did professional course.
How has your
work evolved since you began your own label?
When I set
my label, I set with doing a cotton clothes, cotton dresses for kids, because
my daughter was also small so i did lot of comfort clothing but then i started
a shop, from there my customer basis started, the customer base they want a lot
of ethnic garments, because in India there is so many festivals, so got from
western wear, I still do western wear, and I still do cotton. But from there I
started doing an Indian wear, Indian wear is definitely beautiful, I mean there
is lot of fabrics involved all that so, yeh thats so beautiful.
What do
you keep on mind while designing clothes for kids?
I would
definitely say comfort, safety and style is definitely there, but safety and
comfort comes priority, comfort in the way that kids have very sensitive skin,
so you need to have a breathable fabrics, some that didn't scratch them, even a
little thread or a label also scratch them, So I make sure that soft corner, I
make sure the comfort factors more a prominent because they turned around, So
inner clothes. So that something loved to wear, they should enjoying wearing
it., And the other safety part I remember I was working in different export
house they are very particular, they don't put any buttons or beads. Even they
put buttons they very well secure, its very one thing that I learned when I was
in export house, when I doing for brands for abroad brands, so these things,
even for my kids don't do lot of embroidery which includes lots of beads and
all, because anything can chock if its gone into the mouth, its so that I
really look into it. Then styles have to look like kids, I don't like the look
line mini adults, I definitely style them up that the look so culpable so they
look like gift wrap, that’s the things I keep in mind.
What
advice would you give to young designer?
I would say
build your network, keep connected with the right people and fashion events,
talk to as many people in the same field that is your net worth, second is
build your portfolio, trying work with as mini fashion designer as possible as
mini top labels possible, so these are the two things.
Thank you.
