International Criminal Justice Day
or International Justice Day celebrated on 17 July aims at strengthening
justice, promote the rights of the victims, also help in preventing crime that
threatens the peace, security, and well-being of the world.
this day is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute in 1998. International criminal court is the first permanent and independent international judicial institution that is capable of trying individuals accused of the most serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights which include the crime of genocide, a war of crimes, and crimes against humanity. it is available when a country can't or won't carry out investigations and prosecute perpetrators.
What aggravates a
victim’s pain is when justice is denied to them. Right to Justice is a
fundamental and one of the most essential human rights that render a society
civil and progressive.
Justice needs to
be carried out in an egalitarian manner. Justice being denied in on the grounds
of gender, sexual orientation, class, caste or religion is the biggest form of
injustice and Martin Luther King Jr once said “injustice anywhere is a threat
to justice everywhere”. Fear of punishment and a substantial judicial structure
in place serves as the biggest deterrent for the wrong-doers. Fair trials
through a well grounded progressive judicial structure act as saviours to those
acquitted wrongfully. National and International Justice systems in place also
restrict governments to use their power in an arbitrary manner.
Most importantly,
this day and the idea of justice in its very core acknowledges the worth of
every being, every individual and seeks to preserve their dignity as well as
integrity.
