CURATING A PLASTIC FREE WORLD
CURATING A
PLASTIC FREE WORLD
The word plastic itself has become synonymous to
environmental pollution. Due to its durability and cost efficiency, leading to
higher profits, the material has paved its way to our daily lives to such an
extend that it seems impossible to even imagine a plastic free world.
Plastic takes millions of years to decompose and hence
stays put on the Earth’s surface, clogging its pores and literally choking
the planet. It clogs land surface and drains that leads to floods
resulting from even slightest of rainfall. Waste material wrapped in harmful
plastic bags when consumed by innocent animals, harms their internal system
resulting in death. According to UNESCO, over 1 million marine animals
including fish, sharks and turtles are killed each year due to plastic debris
in the ocean. The 2020 nationwide lockdown against Covid 19 gave the
environment a chance to replenish and rejuvenate itself, as a result of which
humpback whales were spotted in Mumbai sea- indeed a rare site.
3rd July has been marked as International Plastic Free Day. This day can be considered a reminder to not just refuse plastic bags but also try to reduce plastic consumption in other forms. Here are a few handy tips for everyday life.
§
Reuse your single use plastics.
This will directly help in reducing plastic use. Plastic bags, water bottles,
take out containers can be reused easily, plus they might bring down your
household budget as well!
§
Recycle. Yes, some
of the plastic can be recycled! You can get in touch with your local recycling centre
or search for centres around the city online.
§
Participate in clean-ups.
Cleaning your nearby park, garden, open field or a beach can be very rewarding.
§
Switching to better alternatives.
Replacing plastic goods with options such as glass water bottles, glass straw,
bamboo toothbrush, cloth or paper bags, steel or silver cutlery can make a huge
impact at the grassroot level.
§
Spread the word.
Make people aware and provide them alternatives to plastic. No step is small if
taken in the right direction.
To a greener, healthier tomorrow.
