INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS

Aaj khush toh bahot hoge tum !

When was the last time that the answer to this question was a yes?

International day of Happiness marked by United Nations on 20th March falls in spring- a time when new beginnings in nature and positivity are filled in the air. The immediate question then that rings in mind is ‘what is happiness?’

Well, the answer to this question is neither definitive nor universal. Its not one for all but is absolutely subjective. What might give happiness to one may cause an opposite reaction on another person as psychologist Aruna Broota along with other researchers point out that every age group has its own meaning of happiness. 21st century millennials derive their ‘kick’ by activities such as hanging out with friends, partying/clubbing, travelling and most by (sadly though) by the number of likes and followers on social media. We all tend to post only the happy and high moments of our lives on social media sites but what we might forget is that social media’s Shaktiman could be a Gangadhar in real life. Social media can cause loneliness, mood swings and low self-esteem.

We seem to have internalised 3 Idiot’s Virus’s words too seriously when he said “life is a race- if you don’t run fast, you will be like a broken andaa”. Running incessantly after money, fame and success makes us forget what really makes us happy. Despite having bangla, gaadi and bank balance, most Indians feel depression and anxiety.

Happiness may not be a constant in life but one can constantly look out for it.  Doing things that make us happy more often, whether its cooking, dancing, playing football or anything else in the world can help us relax and be more efficient at work. We are at race only with ourselves since every one is unique and therefore each one of us can walk on our own pace.

Pause, take a moment to assess what makes you smile and try to make your mind wander less as Mahatma Gandhi once said “happiness is when what you say, what you think, what you do are in harmony”.
