Vandana, the creator of the kids brand "Mini-me" is a leading name in the Fashion industry. She has an extremely glorifying career at Quite a younger age. Her business, her fame, and her label name say a lot about her. Let's know a bit more about her career.
What sparked your interest in fashion?
As a child, I was always fond of the small particular things in life. I have always been an observer of the colors, textures, threads, fabrics since a very young age. I was very much interested in all of these little things. Plus, I had an aunt who was so fashionable. She used to wear fabrics and clothes from all the different areas of India, even my grandfather used to go abroad and get a variety of fabrics from all over the world. Since childhood, I was really leaning towards dressing up myself and dressing up the dolls. I also studied home science in my higher studies, in which you get to know about a large range of textiles and fabrics. So, all of that generated my interest in the Fashion world.
Are you self-taught or did you study fashion design?
It was self-taught in the beginning, and Yes, I did study fashion design from NIIFT, BANGALORE. After the studies, I started working. After gaining some experience, I went for a business management course in London. Before my professional studies in fashion, I was self-taught. Through Home science, I gained a lot of knowledge in the field of manufacturing different fabrics. Also, as I said, I had an interest in this field since before, So, I always loved to learn the stitching of clothes for my dolls, for my younger cousins.
How has your work evolved since you began your own label?
I started my label with cotton fabrics basically. Cotton fabrics because, my daughter was also small, and cotton clothes are always comfortable for the kids. After some time, I started my shop. Then, there were demands for ethnic wear by the customers. So, I evolved to the designing of Indian wear. Of course, Indian wear is always so beautiful, and always in demand.
What do you keep in mind while designing clothes for kids?
For me, the first and foremost thing for Kids is Comfort and Safety. The style is always there, but the comfort and safety of the kids are always my priority. Because the skin of the kids is so sensitive, towards the touch of the stuff. Even the thread or the label is sometimes so uncomfort the kid. The fabric should always be loving for the kids to wear. And, for safety, I do not involve much of the small items like buttons and beads in the clothes. As the kids are always playful about everything. They can get themselves harmed with these small items. They can go in the mouth, or choke them. Other than this, I always design clothes that make the children look kiddish, and the design should never look like adults. I style them up as kids only.
What advice would you give to the young designers?
So, Firstly, I will advise them to focus on networking. Try to build up the right contacts that can help you build yourself. Connect with the successful people of your field. This will help you build your brand.
Secondly, I will say that work with as many designers as you can, and as many top labels as possible.
