RELEVANCE OF GANDHIANISM TODAY
The world remembers Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi today as this year marks his 73rd death anniversary. India’s most famous apostle was shot dead by Nathuram Godse on 30th January 1948. What the gunshot could kill was only the flesh and blood and not the ideals of the Mahatma that serve as the guiding light decades after and shall continue to be so for generations to come. Here are a few Gandhian principles that stay relevant in contemporary times, helping in creating a better civilization.
Simple
living, higher thinking.
We keep on running in order to acquire more
and more, caught in the spiral, missing onto the little moments of happiness
life has to offer. The worldwide lockdown consequent of the Coronavirus
pandemic reminded us of this fundamental principle as the human race realized
it can survive on much less than what its greed craves for.
Sustainable
development.
Mahatma Gandhi said, “The Earth has enough
for everyone’s need, but not for anyone’s greed". Continuing the principle
of simple living, we need to adopt the path of ‘sustainable development ‘ where
progress and care for the environment go hand in hand.
Non-violence.
The most significant, effective, and popular
tool that emerged during India’s independence struggle was that of ‘non-violence’. What can be resolved through dialogue doesn’t need any weapons or
bloodshed. The farmer's protest in Delhi that recently turned violent as the
nation celebrated its Republic gathered criticism from every corner of the
globe. If a nation can gain its independence through non-belligerence, then why
can’t it solve its internal as well as external differences through it?
Trending on social media these after PM
Modi’s speech #AatmanirbharIndia stems from Gandhi’s policy of going local-
from raw materials to manufacturing to consuming the end product and services. The government’s policy of ‘Make in India' is bound to upscale the economy and foster
young talent.
Cleanliness
Gandhiji throughout his life laid great
emphasis on cleanliness- of not just the body but one's surroundings as well. The
‘Swach Bharat Abhiyaan' is a powerful and much-needed pan-Indian movement in
this direction.

the words of our very own Munna Bhai- “bole
toh Gandhigiri zindabad".
