DANCE AND MENTAL WELLBEING

All of us are familiar with dance as a great form of physical workout with those moves helping us to stay fit. What we may tend to overshadow is the fact that dance can not only release Physical stiffness but it can aid release mental tensions as well. From classical to traditional, from Jazz to Salsa or Kathak or Bhangra, moving our body often does a lot to lift our mood along by lowering stress and anxiety levels; and this fact is proven by various scientific studies and research. A growing number of researchers have proven that, while dancing, an abundance of mood-improving chemicals are released within the body of the dancer, when unleashed, these chemicals help improve one’s mental state; even one “lively” session of dance can reduce depression. According to a study conducted by University of Hertfordshire, the happiness experienced while dancing is measurable even after dancing, as the increased levels in happiness are present as long as a week after the last dance. Because of dances’ ability to “loosen up” participants, allowing them to dance in front of an audience, it allows people to feel less self-conscious when interacting with people, or when “speaking in front of an audience” or a crowd.

Dancing alongside other dancers helps to break the ice between two strange people which helps them experience a sense of oneness and unity. This eventually creates a community where like-minded people can interact on a regular basis and hone their creativity.

In today’s world where relationships have become so fragile, dancing is one tool that can definitely strengthen the bond. Communication is a significant part of any relationship and partner dancing helps the two individuals involved to communicate non verbally through physical contact, eye contact, and gestures. Every spin, lift, or weave can help you connect with your partner mentally and emotionally. Dance movements such as lifts also help build trust amongst the couple. Synchronised steps are a marker of how synchronised your thoughts are with the other person and therefore dancing together requires cooperation and effort on the part of both the stakeholders. Dance is an expression of a relationship where two people, with each step and each twirl, become more connected to each other.

So, what are you waiting for? Get up, grab your shoes and dance your way into happiness!
