INDIANS’ FLEXIBILITY TO ADJUST- GOOD OR BAD

Ants are referred to as ‘superorganisms’ due to their evolutionary success and ability to modify habitats; and cockroaches are said to have survived the atomic bombs dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. What beats these species when it comes to adaptability is the human race, and I am not talking about not just any populace, but our very own Indians!

Indians are a community that has been considered the most adaptable to any situation or change, not just internationally but by themselves as well, that too proudly so! Call it ability to adapt or get used to, the unapologetic jugaadu Indians always know how to get their way. One of the prime reasons for this is the inherent vast cultural diversity of the Indian subcontinent. People of different religious and ethnic communities, regions and language with their unique traditions, customs and lifestyles have existed under one banner for centuries. Hence coexistence of diversities or differences runs in our blood, making us more ‘tolerant’. This works in favour of lakhs of Indians settled abroad due to educational or professional reasons.

The flexibility also serves as an escape mechanism in dealing with personal and social ills, inefficiency of the government and overall events that do not turn in one’s favour.

This so-called tolerant attitude has a down side to it as well. It doesn’t take long for people to cross the thin line between being adaptable and being callous. The Coronavirus pandemic can be a good case in study in this context. People can be spotted donning a careless attitude these days instead of donning their masks, that too in the correct way (that can be altogether a different article, trust me!).

With various subsequent rounds of unlocking taking place around the globe, moving on in life, adjusting to the circumstances is necessary, but Indians specialise in “getting used to” orientation that slips into carelessness or more appropriately translated into “dekha jayega” (we’ll se it) and “sab chalta hai” (its alright however it is)- these phrases are literally our answer to every crisis. Naseeruddin Shah’s rant about the stupid common man in the film A Wednesday was so on point when he claimed “hum bahot jaldi used to ho jaate hai” (we get used to very easily). Environmental concerns, bomb blasts, thefts and myriads of man-made disasters make the headlines day in and out. And our response to that is- browsing through different news channels to aware ourselves and maybe hitting that like button absent minded on a social media post ‘trying’ to raise awareness.

Adapting to the situation is a boon but carelessness is not. We as evolved beings should understand the needs of the hour and learn from our past experiences simultaneously.
