5 tips to become a Model / Actor

all of you aspiring to become a model or actor out there and that are looking to be successful, or are wondering why you are not successful, The Faces is here to help you out.  If you pay close attention to these tips and develop yourself, there is no end to how successful you will become!

1. Self Confidence
This is one of the most important features all top models and actors have.  Their self confidence shines through their photos.  Self confidence is something you can sense about a person when he or she enters a room.  It is evident through body language and speech. It's not just what you say, but how you say it.
Did you know that researchers put the level of nonverbal communication as high as 80 percent of all communication; so only 20 percent of all communication is verbal!
You don't have to be born with self confidence, you can create it. It's like most other things, it can be learned.  Remember, in order for you to get jobs, this confidence has to come out in your photos!

2. Photos
Good photography is very important.  When I see comp cards of photos that are just scanned from their high school pictures, I just look away.  In order to be successful you need multiple looks and variety that will catch the eyes of casting directors and agents.
Agents and model scouts look through hundreds of comp cards and headshots a day.  When they come across photos that are poorly lit, poorly exposed, uncropped, out of focus or badly composed, they will just toss them in the trash and go to the next comp card.

Your photos are your selling point, they create the first impression.  This is another reason why Self Confidence is important.  People will make judgments on your professionalism, personality, and your level of expertise based on what they see in your photos.
3. Motivation
Motivation refers to the direction, intensity and persistence.   Last week I had a model on Myspace.com ask me, "Why can't I get any jobs?  I have tried everything, and it seems I am not going anywhere."  So I took a look at her comp card, read her resume, and took a look at what she has been submitting herself to.  This is the answer I gave her:
"Modeling is about starting a small business, it's about making yourself the product, and trying to pitch yourself to agents, magazine, products and brands that might need a model like YOU, it comes down to having the tools you need to market yourself.
You have 3 pictures on your comp card, but no headshot.  And your photos are unclear, and unprofessional.
You have your resume, but you don't have any skills or interests on it.  How do you expect an agent or casting director to give you the time of day?
You need ambition and research skills, be able to approach brands, agencies, and directors, there is not a single way to become a model.  It is going to take a lot of submissions to become the model or actor you want to be.  You must have the motivation to wake up an hour early everyday and run your business."
4. Realistic Mind Set
Try and maintain realistic expectations, do not underestimate your potential, rather assess your potential and set reasonable goals.  You have to first understand what the basic requirements for modeling and acting are before you can put yourself in a category to market yourself.
Basic Requirements for an Actor

What's good about the world of acting is that it is filled with a broad spectrum of looks. Think about all of the TV shows you've seen, commercials you've watched, and films you've enjoyed. Every possible "type" is represented from the quirky best friend to the ambitious business person to the jockey football player. You may need to "cry on cue" if you are auditioning for a role on a soap opera or "laugh till it hurts" for a role on a sitcom.

Basic Requirements for a High Fashion Model

If you want to be a fashion or runway model you should be tall, long-legged and lean. The age range is usually 14-25 give or take a year. Fashion industry standards for Fashion Models is 5'9" to 6' tall, size 0-4 with average weight of 108-125lbs. This body type looks good on the runway and in front of the camera. In general, the closer you are to the industry norm, the better your chances of succeeding.  Remember, High Fashion is only about 7% of the entertainment industry, so if you do not fit these requirements, there are other avenues...DO NOT GIVE UP!

Basic Requirements for Catalog, Print, Commercial Modeling
The models used in most catalog, print and commercial modeling are average, everyday looking people. The reason people in marketing use common people are because the consumers are just that, common, typical people. People like to buy products from models they feel they can relate to. These models are not overly attractive or stunning because the marketing is designed to help you remember and want the product, not the model. There are some physical requirements for this category of modeling. Typically these models need to be attractive, straight teeth, great skin and hair. Most importantly their face needs to be symmetrical, which means if a line was drawn right down the middle of the face, both sides match up perfectly like a mirror image. Height is not extremely important as long as the models body is proportional.
Next time you're driving on the freeway look at the billboards or look at the ads on the side of buses. Grab the Sunday paper and look at the ad inserts for Target, Sears, JCPenny's or look at the coupon ads.
Basic Requirements for Promotional Modeling
These models are live models that interact with the public to represent a client or product.  Promotional modeling ranges from being hired to hand out free samples of products to representing a car maker at an auto show to being a store front model. This is a category that involves being photographed and is very much about your personality and ability to interact with people. The requirements for this category are typically female with attractive faces, fit bodies and outgoing personalities. Great teeth and skin are also important. There are no strict measurement requirements unless the client is asking for specific types of models. But the model does need to be proportional.

Basic Requirements for Plus Size Modeling
This category of modeling is becoming very popular, even top agencies like Ford and Wilhelmina have plus size divisions. Many designers relate to the public by recognizing the substantial market of average size women. These models can work in many categories of the industry: fashion shows, editorial print, and catalogs.
Plus size or full figured is typically a female only category. These woman's figures are well proportioned, with shapely legs. They are firm, healthy and photogenic. They must be over 5'8" and typically wear a dress size 10-14.

Basic Requirements for Part Models
These models may model their hands, feet, legs, etc. They find work in both commercial and print modeling. Many ads do not feature full length photos of models, especially if the product they are selling is precise or localized to one area of the body. If you have an extraordinary physical feature then you may fit the requirement. Watch for TV commercials and ads in magazines that are advertising razors, lotions, hair products, nail polish, and shoes.

Now you that you have an idea where you fit in the entertainment industry, its time to focus in on your goals and submit yourself to every casting that fits your look, body type and personality.
5. Availability
A missed opportunity is your loss! If someone does contact you about a casting either through your email or if you receive a call, you MUST return the message immediately!  You must check all your messages regularly.  If you receive an email, read it over thoroughly and follow the directions! If you receive a phone call listen to the voice-mail carefully first then return the call and ask for the person that left you the message.
If this is something you are serious about, you need to make time for every opportunity, it does not matter if the job pays or not.  You must be a professional at all times.
