Innovation and creativity have been the guiding forces of my beauty enterprise. I introduced a totally new concept of Herbal Beauty Care, which started a new “herbal wave” in the beauty business. I devised my own treatments and formulated my own products based on Ayurveda, India’s ancient system of herbal healing. A factor that has given my enterprise an exclusive image and set it apart from the others, is the unique combination of Clinical Treatments and Product Excellence, based on its integrated system of a chain of clinics and ranges of Ayurvedic formulations. I extended my salons on a unique franchise system. In fact, our other ventures, like spas, training schools and retail outlets are all based on the franchise system. I also followed unique marketing strategies. I did not rely on commercial advertisements, but rather on “word of mouth,” because I believe that a satisfied client is the best advertisement. One of the most important factors that has made the Shahnaz Husain Group stand apart from the rest and contributed to its success is that it has become known for specialised treatments for specific skin and scalp disorders. We have also become known for product innovation. In fact, herbal beauty care in India is fashioned after the Shahnaz Husain products and treatments.

*You went on to be the Country’s most-prominent Herbal Cosmetics (most-especially with Skin Care products) Entrepreneur do comment…. about the whole idea of Your creation?

Four decades ago, in order to implement the idea of total beauty care, I established customized salon care, with a personalized style, based on individual needs and problems. My concept emphasized the importance of the good health of the skin and hair. The idea was to make the beauty-care experience a truly rewarding one, with visible improvements, as well as to make the relationship with the client a lasting one. That is why the success had to depend on client satisfaction and catering to specific client demands. In fact, our product ranges have grown out of client demand and clinical usage in our salons. I wanted to establish a system that surpassed existing salon care of that time, by providing individual consultation and treatments. Our customized salon care is based on a holistic system and individual needs. Clients are given advice on diet and nutrition too, depending on their particular problem. They are also referred for pathological tests if considered necessary. Clients with specific problems, like dandruff, hair loss, alopecia, acne, spots, skin sensitivity, pigmentation and so on, are given courses of treatments, with constant monitoring and advice. I followed “Natural Care & Cures.”

On principle I never divulge the names of my clients. However, I can speak of the few who went on record to mention me. I created Shamoist for our late Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. In fact, it has become one of our fast moving products. She regularly used Shabase, our sandalwood protective cream, and told me that it was a great boon during her election tours. One of my most celebrated clients was Princess Diana, for whom I created a special line of coloured herbal kohl. I remember, she had come to Harrods, the famous London store and asked for Shaeyes, our herbal kajal. We were showcasing our products at Harrods at the time. Diana was fascinated with our herbal kajal. So, I created a special line for her, with herbal kohl in different colours. Another favourite client of mine was Dame Barbara Cartland, the famous author. She was a great believer in the healing power of herbs and in natural vitamin therapy. She became a dear friend. In fact, Barbara flew to Paris, especially for me, to launch our Flower Power range of products at Galeries Lafayette in Paris. I created one of our premium products especially for her - the Barbara Cartland Honey Rose Mint Moisture Plus. Goldie Hawn, the famous Hollywood actress also loved our Ayurvedic treatments. In fact, she spent an entire day at our salon in Delhi for the Shahnaz experience.

*Who are Your major influences in life?




My father has been a great influence in my life, instilling in me the qualities that stand one in good stead throughout life. I was fortunate to have a broad-minded, Oxford-educated father, Chief Justice N.U. Beg, who put me through schooling in an Irish convent. It was my father who instilled in me my love of English literature and poetry. He guided me and gave me the strength to emerge from a sheltered life and venture into a totally different world of entrepreneurship. When I started my business, he taught me to have faith in my own abilities. It was my father from whom I borrowed Rs. 35,000/- and started by the first herbal salon in my home.

*In the near-future… what do You ahead in life for?

Our future plans include concentrated international branding, strengthening and widening our global chain of franchise ventures and appointing distributors in unrepresented new markets. Product innovation has helped our organization to remain a dynamic one. So, we will continue to launch advanced products in Ayurvedic beauty care in the international markets. We will be taking Ayurveda and Brand India to more countries within the next year. Today, the Group is exporting to countries around the world, like EU, UK, USA, UAE and other countries of the Middle-East, Malaysia, Singapore, EU countries like Austria, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, France, as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Peru and other countries in Asian and African subcontinents. We have set up a Liaison Office in London, to also oversee the business in Europe. The company has also set up targets to increase its export base at least 5 times the current level of exports.
